About this event:
Established in 1952, the reserve is a southward extension of Queen Elizabeth National Park, separated from Lake Edward by a 7km sector. It is located at an altitude of about 1,050m, covering an area of 265km², and is contiguous with Queen Elizabeth National Park and its associated reserves. The reserve lies on the western arm of the Central African rift valley and features moist deciduous forest and grass savanna, with dominant vegetation including Acacia, Albizia species, and various grasses. Fauna includes eastern black-and-white colobus, red colobus, chimpanzees, lions, leopards, elephants, warthogs, giant forest hogs, hippos, buffalo, Uganda kob, waterbuck, bushbuck, topi, and oribi. The reserve, which acts as a buffer zone between the national park and populated areas, faces encroachment from settlement and cultivation, and poaching by local people. A road from the national park to Kabale, providing access to Kayonza Forest, crosses the reserve.
