About this event:
East Madi Wildlife Reserve (E. Madi WR) was established by Statutory Instrument in May 2002, covering 829 square kilometers in Adjumani District, Northwestern Uganda. Its landscapes are diverse and scenic, ranging from the banks of the Albert Nile to the hills above it, and the rolling terrain of southern Adjumani District, offering significant potential for tourism development. The reserve boasts a variety of vegetation, including moist deciduous forest, forest-savanna mosaic, savannas dominated by Butyrospermum and Combretum, and extensive wetlands with Papyrus along the riverbanks. While it once hosted large populations of elephant, buffalo, giraffe, and kob, poaching in the 1970s and 1980s significantly impacted its wildlife. However, some species like Sitatunga, kob, waterbuck, and hartebeest persist in low numbers, with signs of elephant and buffalo returning in certain areas. The presence of Zoka Central Forest Reserve within E. Madi WR adds to its biodiversity significance, making it an area of national importance for conservation efforts.
